Stroke

The Stroke palette provides a variety of stroke types which determine how each tool is applied when the cursor is dragged on the canvas. By default, most painting tools are applied with the Dots or Freehand stroke selected — these produce lines which follow the cursor drag.

Whenever the DragRect or DragDot stroke types are used, the resulting shape can further be transformed using the Move and Scale buttons, and often the Rotate button too. When other stroke types are used, the most recent stroke can be transformed using the Move, Scale or Rotate buttons. To group strokes together for further transformation, hold the CTRL key while drawing each stroke.

By default, 3D objects are applied with the DragRect stroke — they’re applied once at the first click, and resized when the cursor is dragged. The size a 3D object is drawn is irrelevant if Edit mode is to be used (for example, for sculpting) as the object can be scaled to suit the task in hand.

Replaying Strokes

Repeating your most recent stroke on another part of your model is possible by using the Replay Last Relative function. For example, a lightning bolt alpha that is drawn in one location can be identically reproduced at another location as long as the point of view remains the same.

To replay the last stroke in this manner, you must use the Shift+1 hotkey. Because the repeated stroke begins at the cursor location it is not possible to use the interface button for this function.

If you want to replay a set of strokes, you need to use the Stroke >Inventory > Record function to save your actions.  Once done, use Shift+2 hotkey to replay all of the stored strokes.

Because the strokes are recorded, it is possible to change the point of view before replaying them.

Note:
For technical reasons, this feature requires a mouse and does not work with tablets.

Stroke type selection slider

Strokes can be selected by their numerical ID using this slider.

Current Stroke thumbnail

The large thumbnail displays the selected Stroke. Clicking the thumbnail will show a pop-up window for choosing a different stroke.

Mouse Avg

Mouse Input Average Count. The Mouse Average slider affects the way cursor input is processed by ZBrush. A value of 1 means the actual mouse position is used at all times. A value of 2 or higher means a number of mouse positions are read and averaged before arriving at a final value. This can result in smoother drawing movement.
